Claude Desktop — The Native AI Workspace
Claude Desktop Features That Transform Daily Work
-
01
Projects with Persistent Memory
Claude desktop organizes your work into Projects — dedicated spaces where context, files, and instructions persist across every session. No need to re-explain your setup each time you open the app. -
02
MCP Server Integrations
Connect claude desktop to external tools through Model Context Protocol servers. Browse your filesystem, query databases, read email threads, or pull data from APIs — all from within a single claude desktop conversation. -
03
Extended Context Window
Claude desktop supports conversations with very large context windows, letting you upload lengthy documents, entire codebases, or detailed research reports and ask questions across all of it in a single thread.
What Makes Claude Desktop Different from Browser Claude
Claude desktop is a purpose-built native application for macOS and Windows that goes beyond what the browser version offers. While the web interface provides excellent general-purpose access, claude desktop unlocks capabilities that require deeper system integration. The Projects feature in claude desktop stores custom instructions, uploaded files, and conversation history in a structured workspace that reopens exactly where you left off. MCP integrations let claude desktop reach into tools running on your local machine — your file system, running processes, calendar, or connected services — without copying and pasting data manually. For professionals who use Claude as a core part of their workflow, claude desktop provides the responsiveness and flexibility that browser tabs cannot. Download is available directly from Anthropic's website for both Mac and Windows, and the setup process takes only a few minutes.
Why Power Users Prefer Claude Desktop
Offline-Accessible Workspace
Claude desktop stores your project files and instructions locally. Even without an internet connection, your documents and context remain accessible in the app, ready for the next session.
No Tab Clutter
Claude desktop keeps your AI workspace separate from your browser. Switch between tasks without hunting through dozens of tabs. A dedicated native window means faster access and cleaner focus.
System-Level Integrations
Through MCP, claude desktop connects to your local development environment, file system, and third-party APIs. This enables workflows that are impossible in a sandboxed browser context.
Keyboard-First Navigation
Claude desktop is built for professionals who prefer the keyboard. Global hotkeys let you summon the app instantly, and navigation within conversations is designed for speed without a mouse.
Claude Desktop — Full Feature Overview
Setting Up Claude Desktop for the First Time
Installation and initial configuration
Download claude desktop from the official Anthropic website and run the installer for your operating system. After launch, sign in with your Anthropic account or create one if you are new. Claude desktop will sync your subscription status automatically, unlocking features available at your plan level. First-time users are walked through creating their first Project, where they can add a system prompt, upload reference documents, and define the scope of work for that workspace.
Using Projects in Claude Desktop
Persistent context for long-running tasks
Projects in claude desktop are the most significant productivity feature for regular users. Each Project has its own memory space: a custom system prompt that shapes how Claude responds, a set of uploaded documents that serve as reference material, and a conversation history that persists between sessions. A developer might create one Project for a client's codebase, another for personal learning, and a third for writing projects. Claude desktop maintains these spaces completely separately, so switching between them feels like switching between focused work modes.
Connecting MCP Servers
Extend what claude desktop can access
The Model Context Protocol lets claude desktop interact with external systems during a conversation. Supported MCP servers include filesystem access, web search, database connectors, calendar integrations, and custom tools built by your team. Once configured in claude desktop settings, these connections appear as tools Claude can invoke automatically when answering relevant questions. Setting up an MCP server requires adding its configuration to a JSON file in the claude desktop settings directory, which is documented in detail in the official integration guide.
Artifacts and Document Viewing
Review generated content without leaving the app
When claude desktop generates code, documents, or data tables, the output appears in an Artifacts panel alongside the conversation. This panel lets you preview rendered HTML, syntax-highlighted code, and formatted text without copying it into another application. You can iterate on artifacts across multiple turns, asking claude desktop to revise sections, apply formatting changes, or extend the content, with each version available in the artifact history.

Claude Desktop FAQ
Claude desktop is a free download for Mac and Windows. However, using it requires an Anthropic account. Free-tier accounts have usage limits. Pro and Team subscriptions unlock higher limits, priority access, and the full Projects feature set within claude desktop.
Open claude desktop settings and navigate to the Developer section. Add your MCP server configurations to the provided JSON config file. After saving, restart claude desktop to activate the new connections. A list of community MCP servers is maintained on Anthropic's developer documentation pages.
With a filesystem MCP server configured, claude desktop can read and list files in specified directories. You control which paths are accessible. By default, claude desktop does not have file system access — it must be explicitly granted through MCP server configuration.
Claude desktop requires an internet connection to send messages and receive responses from Anthropic's API. Your local project files and settings are stored on your machine, but AI responses require connectivity. Offline caching of responses is not currently supported.
